WHAT IS SEXUAL MINORITIES UGANDA?

Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) is a non-profit, non-governmental umbrella organization  formed in 2004 to address the need to protect and support Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) individuals in Uganda. Today, SMUG advocates for policy reform, while simultaneously monitoring and aiding to coordinate the efforts of 18 LGBTI organizations in Uganda. These organizations provide a plethora of services to the LGBTI community such as medical attention, counselling, guidance, as well as support for the economic empowerment of LGBTI individuals. SMUG works closely with local, regional and international human rights organizations and activists with one goal: to end discrimination and injustice towards LGBTI persons in Uganda and ensure that all Ugandans are equally respected and valued no matter their sexual orientation, or gender identity or expression.

Objectives

To advocate and lobby through coordination of efforts by local and international bodies for the equality of all Ugandans irrespective of gender, age, sexual orientation, tribe, religion, and social status.

To build and strengthen visibility through media, literature, dialogues, debates, and drama.

To advocate and lobby for social and judicial inclusion of people with diversity.

To fight against HIV/AIDS in the LGBTI, MSM and WSW community.

To generate data and information, and knowledge on LGBTI human rights abuses and provide remedies.
